Pain Relief with Bowen Therapy

Bowen therapy is an holistic approach to pain relief and healing, based on the theories and philosophies of its originator, Tom Bowen, who practiced in Victoria, Australia. He believed that the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health problems could be found in the soft tissue or fascia. Fascia is a specific type of connective tissue that forms a three dimensional web which surrounds every tissue in the body. It is known as the body organiser as it embraces all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles. Therefore, if there is dysfunction in the fascia, every structure, muscle, nerve and organ in the body can be affected.

How does Bowen Therapy work?

Bowen therapy works by stimulating specific receptors that enable the body itself to correct dysfunctions and restore homeostasis on a holistic level. This is achieved through specific fascial (soft tissue) release and integration technique. The actual treatment consists of a series of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. Treatments are pleasant with no forceful manipulations used.

Bowen treats the cause rather than the symptoms which has been shown to have permanent and profound healing and pain relief outcomes. These results are experience by many people who may present with a wide range of painful conditions, where treatment from other modalities have resulted in little improvement. Bowen assists the body’s own healing resources to achieve balance and harmony. This can then result in rapid and often long-term relief from discomfort and pain. Bowen is not an ongoing therapy and in most cases the patient can expect substantial relief after just the first session and significant resolution within three sessions. However, with chronic issues or repeat injuries some additional treatments may be required. Some people also have periodic Bowen therapy to help maintain body integrity and homeostasis and to prevent the onset of problems.

After your treatment

Bowen therapists advise that you do not have any other physical therapy (massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture or kinesiology) for one week after treatment. The reason is that these may undo the balance achieved through Bowen.

Possible reactions may be felt such as hot and cold flushes, emotional releases, headaches and body aches. These are all positive signs that the healing process is working.
